Introducing Adelaide Roller Derby Player Invader Scrim

Invader Scrim plays for the Road Train Rollers in the Adelaide Roller Derby league.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

With their 15th season underway, Adelaide Roller Derby (ADRD) is back this weekend with another bumper double header.

The 2022 season began last weekend with a double header as Road Train Rollers gained their revenge on the four-time defending champs Mile Die Club.

While Wild Hearses battled the Salties in a close contest that saw Wild Hearses score their first victory in six years.

A safe and empowering space for the LGBT+ community, Adelaide Roller Derby is a great way to spend an afternoon and evening with a family-friendly atmosphere, building community and creating positive change, alongside the fierce competition on track.

Here, we profile Road Train Rollers team member Invader Scrim.

Who is Invader Scrim? I have been playing roller derby for ten years, seven of which have been with ADRD as a member of the Road Train Rollers.

I have also worked as a skating instructor for Skatescool in the past. I am a bit of a nerd and have almost finished my Bachelor of Archaeology at Flinders University.

My role... On the Road Train Rollers is jammer, and I have also jammed on the Adelaide Rep Squad for the last four years.

My first roller derby bout was... In 2012, Roadies vs. Salties Grand Final.

When did you settle on your roller derby name, and was it a unanimous decision? I had another derby name before I joined ADRD, but I didn't like it. My nickname has been Scrim forever, and my favourite cartoon of all time is Invader Zim, so once I put the two together it was pretty unanimous.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym... Was this morning.

Social media is... 20 per cent complaining boomers and 80 per cent memes.

To date, my most embarrassing moment... Was definitely something recently, but I do too much embarrassing stuff to keep track!

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be the team's spokesperson? Oh gosh, I have never really thought about it. I think Lori Petty back in the 'Tank Girl' days would be an awesome Roadie spokesperson.

My favourite app at the moment is... Apple podcasts; did I mention I am a huge nerd?

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party? I would like to invite my buddy Meryl Creep, Slaps aka Fanny Finagle, and Tigger (not the one from 'Winnie The Pooh').

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Eggplant roasted in tomato sauce with polenta fries, and it would melt your face.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? I LOVE animals of all kinds!

What's the one chore you dislike the most? I hate folding laundry, it's the worst.

Do you have any phobias? I am afraid of moths, otherwise known as mottephobia. A rain moth got stuck in my hair when I was younger and died trying to escape. So yeah, I don't like them near me.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? Maybe if it was a fun gameshow where I had to do stunts or complete weird challenges.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? I would prank my partner. I'd probably pretend I had some kind of horrible kitchen-related accident like cutting my finger off or something.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Daria, without a doubt. Sarcasm is my best friend.

Last show you binge-watched? 'The Witcher'. I love the mythology behind it.

Adelaide Roller Derby 2022 season continues with bouts at Adelaide Showground on 7 May, 25 June and 9 July before the Grand Final double header 6 August.
