International Cake Show 2019 Review @ Brisbane Showgrounds

Ben Cullen, who appeared at International Cake Show in Brisbane.
Raised free-range on a Darling Downs farm, Pepper has been writing and re-writing and overthinking about lots of topics from her own songs, paraphernalia and bios to rave reviews of John Mayer and sundries since time immemorial. Also: tractors.

Australian Cake Artists & Decorators Association’s (ACADA) International Cake Show Australia rose to impressive heights of cake artistry expertise at Brisbane Showgrounds.

From life-sized displays of  ‘Wind In The Willows’, the Great Barrier Reef and a ‘Mystical Queen of the Sea’ by Spaniard Daniel Dieguez, to the intricate arts of curled, twirled, printed, punched and piped embellishments: ACADA curated a family fun zone full of sugar, wonder and international celebrities.

There were competitions, workshops, more than 90 free cake, cookie, chocolate and sweet demonstrations, other nibbles and kids activities.

On the main stage, the two-day International Cake-Off Challenge had a team of three Australians pitched against an International trio, including the UK’s Ben Cullen (of ‘Extreme Cake Makers’) to build a ‘Tall Tale’ no less than 1.5m tall! It’s not every day you need a ladder to make a cake.

Guest judges included dessert king and Tim Tam Collaborator, Adriano Zumbo, the British army’s first ever female helicopter pilot Rosie Dummer and cake empress Monica Cavallaro of Moreish Cakes.

We interviewed Ben before the show who explained his motivation for participating in events like International Cake Show Australia: “If it gets people creating art themselves and having fun with it then that is ultimately the main goal!”

International Cake Show Australia was on from 17-19 May.
