I'm There: Grandma's Bar

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.
What?

A retrosexual haven of cosmopolitan kitsch and faded granny glamour, with its fresh n’ fiery cocktails served to you by an amiable and conversant staff. The simplistic décor is characteristic of the casual and cosy atmosphere it helps provide. This is not a place you go to ‘see or be seen’.

Where?

Hidden away in a basement, amongst the tumultuous hustle of Clarence Street, is this little sanctuary of relaxation and good times.

Who?

Having returned from the UK, local boy James Brady, and his business partner Warren Burns, noticed that Sydney was lacking in hospitable venues – places that offer “the good service” as he calls it. With over a decade’s worth of experience in the hospitality industry, James decided that if he was going to lay the bricks he might aswell own the house. “A venue that looked after and serviced people properly” was the aim. The wonderfully flavoured cocktails were just an added bonus I guess.

How?

“Good ingredients”. Fresh fruit and juice, imported when it needs to be in accordance with the seasons, along with the syrups and ginger beer that’s made in-house, help pack Grandma’s tiki-style cocktails with a multitude of flavours.

Grandmas-Bar-5Why?

Because drinking with your mates is fun, and even more so when it’s pressure free. No competing over who can pull the most chicks, dudes, or kangaroos; Grandma’s Bar “is not a place you come to pick up. Rather just to sit around drinking and laughing with your friends”. Still not convinced? Have a ‘Dark and Stormy’, and thank me later.
