Danny Baker has been sacked by the BBC after tweeting a picture of a couple holding hands with a chimpanzee and the words 'Royal Baby leaves hospital'.
Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor had left hospital with his bursting-with-pride parents a day earlier. In one keystroke the radio host demonstrated he was racist or stupid – or both – subsequently denying the now-deleted tweet was racist. He said it was a misinterpreted joke about "Royals vs circus animals in posh clothes".
The Beeb disagreed zinging him into the ether. A spokesman for the global broadcaster confirmed Baker's termination. “This was a serious error of judgment and goes against the values we as a station aim to embody. Danny’s a brilliant broadcaster but will no longer be presenting a weekly show with us.”
Baker insisted he “Would have used same stupid pic for any other Royal birth or Boris Johnson kid or even one of my own. It’s a funny image. (Though not of course in that context.) Enormous mistake, for sure. Grotesque. Anyway, here’s to ya Archie, Sorry mate.”
He subsequently confirmed his unsuitability for the privilege of having a public voice announcing he'd been sacked under “a masterclass of pompous faux-gravity". "They said I actually meant that ridiculous tweet and the BBC must uphold blah blah blah. Literally threw me under the bus. Could hear the suits knees knocking."
