Global Integrity Summit: More Than Ideas

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

We live in an increasingly globalised world that is changing more rapidly than ever.

Human rights, free speech, privacy, climate change and press power are just a few of the most volatile global issues of our time – dominating our media, shaping our future and forming an increasing part of our everyday conversations. These issues are more than news items, more than academic concepts, and the solutions must be more than ideas.

This October, the 2nd Global Integrity Summit discusses and deconstructs these issues, bringing together some of the most progressive minds and controversial social commentators from Australia and around the world.

New York Times environmental blogger (and guitar playing, singer-songwriter) Andrew Revkin; controversial political cartoonist Michael Leunig; the ‘meddling priest’ Fr Frank Brennan; former leader of the Australian Liberal Party John Hewson; and fearless ‘defender of human rights’ Gillian Triggs, lead a line-up of over 30 speakers.

Global Integrity Summit DAY ONE

The first day of the Summit (13 October) features a diverse program of keynotes, panels and debates including:

Nothing to Hide: Nothing to Fear - Hosted by ABC’s Steve Cannane ('The Drum', 'Lateline')
'Google's philosopher' Luciano Floridi (UK/Italy); Carly Nyst (UK), Bret Walker and Gillian Triggs, take on the challenges of big data, surveillance and the competing claims of privacy and transparency.

2030: Towards a World Without Poverty
Gillian Triggs and Fr Frank Brennan, join international human rights experts Attiya Waris (Kenya) and Erna Witoelar (Indonesia) for a discussion around human rights, human security and the 'bottom billion'.

A Cartoonists Moral, Civic & Spiritual Duty To Speak
Michael Leunig examines the limits and responsibilities of political satire and free expression, the ethics of satire as a ‘pillar of democracy’ and free speech versus hate speech. “My cartoons have also had me labelled a misogynist, a blasphemer, a homophobe, a royalist, a misanthrope and a traitor, to name but a few. I would sum it all up by saying: I am a cartoonist.”

Press Power, Press Freedom & Journalistic Integrity
Award-winning journalists Maxine McKew, Stephen Mayne and Madonna King lead discussions on the power and freedom of the press, journalistic integrity, the changing media landscape and who to believe in a society where everyone has a right to voice.

Data & Goliath (via video)
International 'security guru' Bruce Schneier highlights the many hidden battles to capture your data and control your world.

Towards A Good Anthropocene? (The Age Of Us)
John Hewson and Andrew Revkin join ‘nature’s banker’ and green economist Pavan Sukhdev to consider climate change, climate justice and humans' ability to change the planet.

Anthropocene: “relating to or denoting the current geological age, viewed as the period during which human activity has been been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.” – Oxford Dictionary

Global Integrity Summit DAY TWO

The second day of the Summit (14 October) is an intense, collaborative roundtable focussing on the corporation of the future and values it might be expected to reflect by investigating the role of business in:
advancing human rights;
developing low carbon industries;
ensuring the integrity of banking, infrastructure and international tax;
and combating, rather than succumbing to, corruption.

The Global Integrity Summit will be held at the Queensland Conservatorium and Rydges Hotel, 13-14 October.
