One weekend to rule them all, One weekend to find them, One weekend to bring them all, And in the darkness...
Fear not, squire, it's a near certainty this festival won't be anywhere near as scary as Mordor in The Third Age. We're of course talking about the Medieval Market & Fantasy Fanfaire to which the historic village of Ipswich shall play host, as part of Brisbane's annual Anywhere Festival.
Don't feel awkward if you don't speak elvish (or Latin), take the weekend off and travel to another time. It's sure to be a fine mash-up of history and fantasy pop-culture, and a great way to find the 21st Century's lost sense of community, even if it's with new friends who are 500+ years old.
If this isn't enough to get you hot under the tunic, perhaps the promise of learning your future will; Tarot Readings will be occurring in the Mystical Zone all weekend. Understanding that sometimes dressing up isn't enough to satiate one's fantasies, organisers have provided an all-weekend L.A.R.P.(Live Action Role Play) arena with real (foam) weapons and battles.
For the knaves who wish to ignore history and alternate realms, there is a portrait studio hosted by Studio 7 and live art by award-winning painter Jasmine McFarland as she attempts to capture the likeness of Instagram celebrity, and Global Cosplay Champion of G2E2, Major Sam.
The event also coincides with the 'Alice In Wonderland: Through The Looking Glass' premier costume party at the local BCC cinemas. So you won't even have to untie your girdle or unlace your corset between celebrations.
There'll be plenty more activities and post-antiquity fare as feast for your face and your soul. Now, what could possibly be better than a double alliteration AND all of this? The event is free. Enjoy.
Medieval Market & Fantasy Fanfaire takes place at Ipswich City Mall 21 & 22 May, as part of Anywhere Festival which runs 5-21 May.
