New South Wales arts and disability organisation, Accessible Arts, is presenting a free masterclass programme concerning music industry access and inclusion, this April.
It comprises two workshops for industry professionals with and without disability. While venues, festivals and industry employers have become more committed over time to enhancing access and inclusion, many don’t know where to begin. This programme has been developed to bridge that gap, through building disability confidence.
The training has been designed to upskill artists, employers, venues and festivals, with a goal to better understanding and responding to access requirements. There’ll be practical solutions, for exisiting barriers. . . And opportunities to increase the representation of musicians with disability at festivals, gigs, and on air.
First up is a Masterclass For Music Practitioners With Disability Or Who Are d/Deaf. This course, designed to boost confidence through knowledge, will include guidance on appropriate language and etiquette, how to write and submit an access rider and confidently/effectively communicate access requirements, and more.
Then, there’s the Masterclass For Industry (General Industry And Employers) – with a goal of creating a better understanding of access requirements. Attendees will learn about the social model of disability, the language and etiquette of disability, creating an inclusive workplace, and where/how to access advice.
The Course Facilitator is deaf musician and academic, Dan Pash. He’s a passionate advocate for creating greater opportunities for musicians who identify as d/Deaf or disabled, and has appeared across podcasts and radio programmes to further the conversations around these issues.
