From winning jury awards at the Montreal World Film Festival (MWFF) and getting selected for the Toronto International Film Festival Short Cuts programme, to having 53 finalists in the Australian Commercial Radio Awards, AFTRS students are a force to be reckoned with.
One of Canada's oldest international film festivals and recognised by the International Federation Of Film Producers Associations, MWFF was held in Quebec in late August. Premiering 'The Kangaroo Guy' to the world, AFTRS graduate Joel Loxton took out the Jury Award in the International Student Award category. Written and directed by Joel, seven AFTRS students in total worked on the film including: Joel, Eleanor Winkler, Michaeal Steel, Michael Price, Gareth Evans, Black Guy and Helen Grimley.

Another AFTRS student to look out for is Malina Mackiewicz, Writer and Director of student film 'Deszcz (Rain)' which has been selected for the Toronto International Film Festival Short Cuts programme.'Deszcz' will have its world premiere when it screens as part of 'Short Cuts Programme 3' – a selection of short films and 'compelling stories of changing circumstances, transformative realisations and many other moments that turn lives upside down.' Her fellow cohort that worked on the film includes: Milica Gligorevic, Benjamin Cotgrove, Rolando Olalia, Elsie Moult and Ellie Cumming.
Malina Mackiewicz has seen another great success earlier this year after 'Driftwood Dustmites', both written and directed by her, premiered at Berlinale in Germany.
The AFTRS Radio alumni are also experiencing success as a record number have been announced as finalists in this year's Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs). The ACRA's are celebrating their 27th year in 2015, and will hand out awards in 25 different categories, and AFTRS can happily share that they are represented with an astonishing 53 of the finalists.
