6 Unlucky Moments With Cassandra Ramsay

Luck Be A Lady
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Ipswich playwright/ producer Cassandra Ramsay will be premiering 'Luck Be A Lady' this May, a new play with THAT Production Company as part of the 2015 Anywhere Theatre Festival.

Cassandra, who is currently the creative producer of Ipswich-based THAT Production Company will be collaborating with the company’s Artistic Director, Timothy Wynn, to create the comedy based on her unlucky life. “I’ve always been unlucky” says Cassandra. “But it never seemed random. All the women in my family – my mum, nanna, sister – we all seem to face a few more unfortunate events than everyone else.”

Guest be a no show

I had to go to Sydney for a wedding – one night only. When I arrived the trains were cancelled, the bus went on a detour and I was told to get on the wrong ferry. I missed the wedding.

Sight be a no see

I bought brand new contacts. One tore immediately. One fell down the drain. The last one just disappeared and was found four days later stuck in the top of my eyeball.

Voice be a no hear

I lost my voice the morning I was supposed to perform a six show season of a brand new work by contemporary performance ensemble The Vertebras. My role was ‘The Narrator.’

Subtle skin be a no feel

An iron fell on me, a hot water bottle exploded on me and I once fell in the oven. I have a lot of scars, and apparently I’m destined to have the same fate as the wicked witch in Hansel and Gretel.

Directions be lost

If you take a train, a bus or a plane with me, it will most definitely not make it on time. Six of the eight last flights I took were delayed or cancelled; I was once stuck on a train for over three hours with no power (no doors, no windows, no air con) in the middle of nowhere during summer; a new bus driver got lost, panicked and left me and my family by the side of the road.

Family be unlucky

And just to prove it runs in the family (this just happened): My mother’s tropical honeymoon was detoured to cold and damp Hobart (which they not only didn’t want to go to, but also had no suitable clothing packed!). Her new husband got incredibly sick and was hospitalised for a week. My mum flew back home while her new husband stayed behind in Sydney. Then the airline lost all their luggage. Worst honeymoon ever!

'Lucky Be A Lady' plays Dancing Tiger Studio, 15-17 May.
