5 Things To Do In Brisbane That Unfortunately Cost Money

The Carol Lloyd Award 2024 recipient, Brisbane musician Jo Davie is about to release her debut EP.

Teased last month with the single release 'Colder' that beautifully introduces her folk-pop songwriting fans of Julia Jacklin and Phoebe Bridges will engage with, 'Nothing Comes Free' (released tomorrow) is a six-track EP that features previous releases 'Throw Me A Rope' and 'Sandcastles'.

A regular on the festival circuit – with appearances at Woodford Folk Fest, National Folk Fest and Caloundra Music Festival – Jo has also supported ARIA-winning artist Katie Noonan across a variety of venues.

"With great excitement and nervous energy, I announce the release and tour of my debut EP 'Nothing Comes Free' 🥹🦖. Catch me and the band on eight dates, with a bouquet of beautiful venues and supports 🧡. Would simply adore to see you at a show 🥹🦖🦖."

Ever since Jo graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium in 2017 with First Class Honours and the University Medal, her music career has bloomed. She has performed internationally on other projects, all while completing her PhD.

"In honour of my debut EP, 'Nothing Comes Free', I have listed my top five things to do in and around Brisbane that, sadly, cost money, but are still really fun. As my dad says, 'there's no such thing as a free lunch'."

1: Day trip to a regional town

This is one of my favourites. Taking a sunny day off to drive somewhere new can really help clear the mind. For a relatively short trip from Brisbane, I recommend Murwillumbah (Northern NSW) and Eudlo (Sunshine Coast).

Would you believe I'm playing shows in these towns for my tour?! What a reason to get tickets! Even better, take the opportunity to find the local thrift shop, and sample some local produce.

2: Go vintage shopping

This can get expensive depending on the location, but I adore vintage shopping. Finding a curated set of vintage gems to explore is my heaven. For this, I recommend Can You Keep A Secret (Woolloongabba), Retro Metro (Paddington), and the Lifeline Vintage Revival (Annerley).

3: Support a local band

Local venues really need support right now, and what better way to spend an evening than go see that local band your mates have been raving about. You can even kit out your wardrobe with very cool new merchandise in the process.

I recommend The Bearded Lady (West End), Can You Keep A Secret (Woolloongabba), and the Cave Inn (Woolloongabba) for always putting on great local acts.

4: Go to the movies

Going to the movies is the best – sitting in the dark with strangers, sign me up. Bonus points for cinemas that bring food and drink to your seat, now that's living. I like the Blueroom Cinebar in Rosalie.

5: Crafting

Go to Spotlight and purchase craft supplies to bead necklaces with your sister-in-law. Granted, this is quite niche, but who doesn't like a crafternoon?

Spending time learning a new craft while watching '10 Things I Hate About You' can be extremely therapeutic, and you might even get some fabulous custom merch out of it (you'll have to come to a tour show to find our creations!).
