Since 2007 Adelaide Roller Derby has been the full-contact, all-girls jamming sport of choice for players and spectators right across the state.
For the uninitiated, roller derby can be described as skating and fighting; players roll around a concrete oval playing offence and defence all at one. The aim is to let your team’s ‘jammer’ through the pack, while ‘blocking’ the other team.
Details aside, this fabulous sport includes costumes, characters, hilarious commentary from local comedians and rocking entertainment from local bands. The Salty Dolls are one of the original home teams, and will be rolling it out with the Wild Hearses for grand final glory.
The Salty Dolls' Captain, Psycho Fox, says “Roller derby relies on good teamwork more than any other sport. You have to play offense and defense at the same time, so knowing you can rely on the other strong, kickass women out there on track with you is vital to winning – and our little Salty secret! We know when we step on track that we are all in this together: that makes the game a lot of fun but it also makes us better players, both individually and collectively. The Grates – 'Inside Outside'
The Salty Dolls skated out to this in 2015 and the crowd loved it. We use this as one of our pump-up tracks back in the change rooms and its use of derby terminology makes it so applicable.{youtube}JwGCK-lirpk{/youtube}
Rocky Horror Medley
In 2014 the entire league skated out to a medley of tracks from the 'Rocky Horror Picture Show'. The performance featured our very own Brad and Janet (Ref All Torque and Wild Hearse Karmen Getme) and two Frankenfurters battling it out for the title of Frank Supreme! Dropkick Murphys – 'I’m Shipping Up To Boston'
A Salty favourite, this first skate-out song of 2013 led the team to a 'Sailor Peg' chant for the team 'all in' for the year, and saw the Salties remain undefeated for the entire year, eventually taking out the GF!{youtube}x-64CaD8GXw{/youtube}
