5 Reasons To Try Meditation Even If You Think You Can't Sit Still

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and some beyond.

A dedicated space for community connection, self-discovery and conscious living, Adelaide's Goodness Me Festival is a soulful celebration – a day full of movement, music, wellness, nature and heartfelt connection.

Set to return April 2026 at Riverdell Spiritual Centre, a non-for-profit sanctuary in Hillier, the team behind Goodness Me are intent on bridging "the growing gap in community connection".

"We pride ourselves on connection within community, and in a time where mental health and loneliness are rising, Goodness Me Festival exists to bring people back together – to be seen, celebrated and supported exactly as they are.

"We are also passionate about supporting new and emerging wellness practitioners, giving them a place to share their magic with the world."

With a range of activities planned – including yoga, breathwork and sound healing – alongside live music and market stalls, here the Goodness Team share some reasons why you should try meditation.

"You don't need to sit cross-legged for an hour in silence to feel the benefits of meditation. Whether it is one minute or ten, the power of presence can shift everything, and we encourage you to give it a go.

"The best part? It is more accessible now than ever – whether you prefer to attend a class or listen on YouTube, you can find a style that suits you (this can also look like a walk in nature or a few slow breaths), be creative, and most of all, don't take it too seriously!

"Meditation is a tool that you can carry with you anywhere and anytime. The beauty of meditation is that it is not about how you do it – it is about how it brings you home to yourself."

1: Calms your nervous system

In the fast-paced world we live in now, where we are always expected to be 'on' and reachable 24/7, meditation gives our mind and body a moment to pause, reset, and breathe. It can be that second of silence or regulation before responding.

2: Helps you hear yourself clearly

Meditation quiets the external noise so that you can reconnect with your inner voice (maybe one you are not used to hearing), the voice that is often drowned out by to-do lists, notifications, and constant overthinking. It is an opportunity for your mind to get some good quality shut-eye.

3: It is accessible anywhere, anytime

You do not need a yoga mat or incense (as beautiful as they are, these are not necessities). Just a quiet moment in your car, shower, or even on a walk can become your meditation space. As long as you have yourself, then no need to rely on anything else.

4: Builds emotional resilience

We get it! Meditation can take some getting used to, or you may just need to find which style really speaks to you. When practiced regularly, you may notice you respond to stress more calmly and recover from overwhelm quicker than you have in the past. It is like an internal buffer for modern life (remembering that we cannot control what happens, but we can control how we react).

5: Reconnects you to the now

Most of our anxiety lives in the future, and our regrets live in the past. Meditation anchors us in the moment; it brings us into the now – it is the only place that truly matters (all the other stuff can surely wait a minute or ten).

"Try this: Set a three-minute timer. Close your eyes and breathe in for three, out for five. That's it. Congratulations. . . you are meditating!

"Goodness Me is a one-of-a-kind festival as there is something for everyone, whether you are exploring spirituality and wellness for the first time or looking for a fun weekend filled with goodness; we cannot wait to welcome you!"

Goodness Me Festival takes place at Riverdell Spiritual Centre (Adelaide) on 18 April, 2026.
