5 Reasons To See EMO Live (Nothing To Do With The Music)

The Enthusiastic Musicians’ Orchestra
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The Enthusiastic Musicians’ Orchestra (or EMO as they are affectionately known) will perform a brand new programme of music for big band featuring voice.

“This is the first time that we've commissioned a complete programme of new works that feature vocalists and also the first time we've commissioned new works from female composers,” says Joshua Hatcher, Musical Director and baritone saxophonist of EMO.

Some of Brisbane’s best established and up-and-coming composers including: Andrew Garton, Joshua Hatcher, Rafael Karlen, Wade Gregory, Travis Jenkins and Kayleigh Pincott will be premiering their new works. Not only will you hear beautiful and premiering work, saxophone soloist Matt Christensen has a few extra reasons to see the show (that have nothing to do with the music):

Beards

Jazz musicians have always loved a beard, and beards love jazz. If there is one thing you can guarantee - EMO gigs are fertile ground for facial hair fanciers both among the musicians and punters alike. From sophisticated soul patches to downright big and bushy EMO has had it all. This gig in particular features the return of a prodigal saxophonist fresh from masquerading as a lumberjack somewhere in Canada, so don’t miss your chance to see the latest in hirsute fashion from abroad...

Cocktails

It is one of Brisbane’s best kept secrets, so I probably shouldn’t be saying this - but liquid ecstasy can be found in the cocktail menu at the BJC bar. The best music deserves the best booze. Enough said.

Style

There is another thing jazz musicians love even more than their facial hair - a sharp suit. Pity that Summer in Brisbane is just so damn hot though! But regardless of what the weather holds there is one man who will rise above the elements and maintain his unbeaten record as Brisbane’s sharpest dresser… and he just happens to lead the trumpet section of EMO.

Sass

Pretty much a guarantee that every EMO gig will feature more than a little entertaining banter among the band between songs for those who dare sit close enough to enjoy!

The best view in town

Seriously. There is something magical about listening to live Jazz with a backdrop of the city lights reflecting off the river. If you have never been, what better night to check it out than with 20 of our best musicians premiering brand new Jazz unique to Brisbane? Perfect for date night, or so I’ve heard!

Enthusiastic Musicians’ Orchestra perform Brisbane Jazz Club 10 December.
