Young witch-to-be Tiffany Aching – a girl who reads the dictionary for fun – ventures into faerie land to rescue her very sticky, and not particularly likeable, baby brother.
With a trusty frying pan as her weapon, her grandmother’s magic book (well actually it's called “Diseases Of The Sheep”) and the Wee Free Men by her side, it's not all what it seems when Tiffany sets off. This is not the world of bright pretty flowers, blue skies with fluffy white clouds, kind fairies, impish pixies and happy endings that abound in our childhood picture books. Instead, Tiffany must face a world where dreams can come to life and really hurt you.
But these are a few reasons why the Discworld is a better place to be than our Roundworld, especially when you are training to be a witch:
The Discworld is flat
It’s a bit like a pizza but without the anchovies. So even if you can’t eat it, you can at least see more of where you are going when you are flying on your broomstick. You have experienced witches to guide you
Although you do have to be careful not to ask them too many questions. Questions can make them quite grumpy.Witch’s school is not like other schools
First you pass the test (which can often involve a battle with a wicked fairy Queen), then you spend years finding out how you did it.You can find many uses for a frying pan other than cooking
Not so good
One not so good thing about being a witch on the Discworld: you have to save annoying incredibly sticky baby brothers who are interested in nothing but eating sweets.'The Wee Free Men' performs Bakehouse Theatre 15-30 April.
