After the success of the first Scarborough Originals event (1 April), the series returns this weekend (7 May) with conscious world/ electro/ dub act Dubarray headlining the festivities.
“It's so important to bring together the community and under the banner of supporting the local arts scene is such a great way to create a community mind,” Kim Ferguson, Event Co-ordinator, says. “We believe that as long as the community keeps supporting The Originals in Scarborough we see the event having a long lifespan in supporting the creative scene.”
Inspired by the likes of St Germain, Thievery Corporation, Groove Armada and Portishead, Dubarray have travelled the world stimulating minds with their sublime fusion of house, trance, drum & bass, trip-hop and dub-reggae grooves. Brett from Dubarray shares five locations they have stayed in while on the road touring.

Landuweel Festival Squatters House, Amsterdam
The festival is held on land that was given to a bunch of squatters around 40 years ago who have since built a community on the land and now run awesome music festivals. Our accommodation was a dorm room in a squatters house with a bunch of randoms and trippers sharing our bathroom. It was better than what most other bands got. lolBurnt Down House, Czech Republic
While on tour in Cesky Krumlov in Czech Republic, we managed to make good friends with some of the locals who invited us to their place in the hills. Little did we know when we rocked up the house had been torched from a domestic two years prior and never rebuilt. It had no power, so made for a cosy spooning session that night with our band members to try and survive the -2 degree weather outside.Deceased Owner, Lancaster Music Festival
In the north west of the UK is a little town by the name of Lancaster. Once a year the whole town turns into a massive music festival where every bar, restaurant and street corner becomes a stage. We were given a house to stay in, which we thought was pretty cool by the son.But his dad, who owned it, had passed away only a few days prior and no one had been there since. He didn't tell us until we got there, which was a little weird and spooky. :-/

The Matchbox Room, France
On our way back to the UK from a massive transit from Spain, we got to the top of France and realised all decent, affordable accommodation had been taken so we slept four in a studio match-boxed-sized room with no window to dispel bodily gases. We had two in the very small double bed, one on the very small space on the floor and one in the very tiny shower/ toilet half hanging out onto the floor. Once again spooning each other for warmth. We don't like to re-live it.
On A Boat Deck Under The Stars, Amsterdam
We had a show in the north of Amsterdam, which the venue said they had organised accommodation. When we rocked up we found out they actually hadn't organised accommodation, but lucky our drummer Damo had met a guy at the show the night before who said (in his intoxicated state) I have a boat in the area and showed Damo a photo. We found the small yacht and pulled the dusty, musty mattresses up to the top deck and slept under the stars. Magic night sleeping with one eye open in an eerie, isolated dock in Amsterdam's industrial area.
Dubarray will be joined by Pat Flaherty Trio, Phenix and Van Larkins at The Scarborough Originals at Jamiesons Park (in Brisbane from 1-5pm) 7 May. From June onwards, The Scarborough Originals will be held on the FIRST SATURDAY of every month at the Scarborough Beach Park in South East Queensland.
