Brisbane boy Grimmer's self-titled debut EP is available now.
Spending his formative years in the alternative scene of the '90s and the pop renaissance of the late 2000s and early 2010s, Grimmer's music is a symbiosis of sweet hooks nestled in distortion and electronica rife with nostalgia.
At four tracks long, Grimmer's debut release is heavily informed by his unpoliced exposure to film and music as a child, and in the light of this, he shares with us his top 5 not-meant-for-kids favourites.
1. Scream
I had a VHS copy of this as a child and would literally watch it front to back on repeat. It's still my go to. Great early reference for campy gratuitousness.{youtube}AWm_mkbdpCA{/youtube}
2. Big Day Out Broadcasts
My sister would tape these and they were always on high rotation. Between Manson's blasphemy and Courtney's potty mouth I was in derelict paradise. RIP Channel [V].{youtube}T8SaXzpGpW8{/youtube}
3. The Exorcist
Was my favourite film literally by age ten. I go into a trance while watching it. Mum would tell me to cover my eyes during 'that scene', but of course I would peek through my little fingers.{youtube}YDGw1MTEe9k{/youtube}
4. Celebrity Deathmatch
This pop-culture slaughterhouse was totally inappropriate for kids, but as if I could resist that flawless claymation. This tape got flogged.{youtube}yKs8ft0dBss{/youtube}
5. Matilda
Okay this is meant for kids, but it's totally heavy and I think this was my first taste of hatred for exploited authority. Kid or adult, Trunchbull is a universal goddamn nightmare.{youtube}P0h9oQu5tU8{/youtube}
Grimmer launches his debut EP at The Bearded Lady 6 March supported by multimedia artist Omegachild and post-punk outfit Pop Grief.
