5 (Major) Stuff-Ups Shannon Smith Is Willing To Share

A Western Australian-based artist living in Fremantle, Shannon Smith's newest release is the bright, cheerful, sonic tapestry 'Every Single Day'.

A blend of smooth Americana with a nostalgically rich folk-pop melody that carries you above the clouds with its feel-good energy, 'Every Single Day' is the kinda bop to remind you of the nourishment of everyday love.

"Reflecting on my own journey, this song celebrates the resilience and beauty of love – warts and all. I wanted to capture the vibrant and uplifting essence of what it means to be in love every single day," Shannon says.

Only releasing his debut single 'Dance The Night Away' in October 2023 (it reached the top of the AIR Charts and remained on the AMRAP Charts for several weeks), Smith has collaborated with Grammy-nominated artists The McCrary Sisters (on the track 'Valentine's Day') and gained recognition from the Euro Music Video Awards and the European Cinefest Golden Nika Awards.

Here, Shannon digs into his memory bank to share some of his life stuff-ups he's survived. "We've all done it! Said something, did something or hurt something (or someone) and wanted to wish it all away!

"I have plenty to share, but here in no particular order, are my top five f... ups (that I'm willing to share!)."

Untrained back somersaults

Full of youthful exuberance I bounded on the dug-in, old rusty trampoline on a trip with my mate's family down in the West Australian Porongurups. In an effort to show off my physical agility, I decided to give the old back somersault a crack.

I've done it off the edge of the pool before. How hard could it be? Well, the landing was pretty f...ing hard! I sprang from the front of the trampoline, all the way to the back trampoline where my feet proceeded to pass through the springs and into the abyss below, while my tail bone and testicles cushioned my landing!

Playing with matches

Oh god! I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M TELLING YOU THIS! Curiosity as a nine year old of ant hills and matches almost caused the suburban park in Adamstown Heights (NSW) to go up in flames circa 1984.

Lucky for me, my foot-stomping skills got the better of the flames before it spread too far and engulfed the neighbouring houses. Now I only play with matches under adult supervision.

My ex meeting my new 'unknown' girlfriend

My long-term girlfriend and I had broken up, but were still working in bands together, and we were working through things to try stay friends. I met someone (my current partner) but didn't tell my ex. I lied to my new partner saying that I had told my ex about her (stupidly thinking it would be easier and I wouldn't have to deal with any upset from my ex).

Well, that all backfired when my ex came over to mine to see if we could work through things, only to have the front door opened by my new girlfriend. What a sh.t show. I wanted the earth to swallow me whole. I had lied about a whole lot of things to try and keep the new relationship secret and it all came out! Lesson learned.

Too much confidence

Playing in the lunchtime, school-yard handball competition, I progressed well through the rounds and into the finals. I was kicking ass! Then I was playing the school bully's best friend. . . and I was winning. Not for long!

In what seemed to be a moment frozen in time, my pants were dropped around my ankles at record pace. Upset, wildly embarrassed and with tears in my eyes, I retrieved my pants to appropriate height and turned to meet my nemesis head-on. I had had enough!

Without a thought I lifted my fists, snarled at him to warn him away (hoping he would apologies or back down). Nope! This kid, two years older and a foot higher than me, raised his two clubs with a smile of megalomanic wolfhound and said "come on".

Survival kicked in for me and I bolted for the teacher to tell of my trauma, only to be re-assured that "well that wasn't nice was it". Is there no justice in this world?!

It's not the fall that kills you

During my invincibility stage of life (3 to 24 years old) on a trip with my girlfriend's family, we stopped off at Eagle Bluff (WA). Atop of a high and large rocky outcrop I surveyed the beauty before me. Keen for a better vantage point, I moved onto a large boulder that overhung the cliff below.

Not afraid of heights, I ventured to the edge to check it out. Then the rock broke under my weight and I plunged down to land on my chest and stomach on another large rock a few metres below. Incredibly winded, I clung on to the rocks as my feet dangled below me.

To add insult to injury, the rock I had previously been standing on, broke away landing on my back and breaking into smaller parts. Never trust sandstone!
