SamPaul

Veteran Adelaide hip hop artist SamPaul is turning over a new leaf as he confronts his own shortcomings on his newest track, 'I Ain't Perfect'.

A buoyant, golden beat layered with vinyl scratches and a mellow piano hook that mesmerises, the rhythm flows freely as SamPaul lays his emotions starkly on his sleeve embracing the self-shame to harvest a positive behavioural change.

"There was a time when I wasn't my best self," he raps, "blaming everyone else for the hand I was dealt, and I did it without an ounce of guilt; couldn't take responsibility, then it was real.

"People try to tell me, but I couldn't see, showing me the truth but I didn't believe; didn't want to face it so I told them to leave, looking for answers, couldn't admit it was me.

"Had to face up like a mirror reflection, I was on the wrong path, had to change direction, lost some long-term friend, yeah I 'caused them harm; was a wakeup call like a morning alarm, the push that I needed to finally seek help, liberating my mind which I found really helped.

"And I stopped blaming everyone else, the only one who could heal me was myself."

One of the most difficult emotional adjustments an individual can make within themselves, SamPaul acknowledges the song tackles his own faults and flaws by "embracing what I can't change, and working on the things I can, to be a better version of myself.

"The lyrics were inspired by my own personal growth journey. Facing my monsters, making myself accountable to the things I can do better, and accepting the things I can't."

By pairing the song's lyrics to a vibrant, optimistic beat, SamPaul wants to create a lighthearted bop infused with an important message.

"The influence for I Ain't Perfect is wide and varied, but carries one common thread; to speak on something I find prevalent both personally and in society, but with an uptempo almost happy vibe, putting a positive perspective to what can be a somewhat dark road."

Although he has no live shows booked for the rest of 2025, Sam Paul is building towards a busier 2026. "No current shows at this stage, however I am planning a few shows both in Adelaide and interstate in 2026. Stay tuned."

Here, SamPaul shares some of his favourite culinary collaborations/ pairings he's been gobbling down since he was a kid. Bless.

Weetbix with cream and honey

As a kid, my brothers and I would race to get the cream off the milk to have on our breakfast. At some point I started to replicate this with store-bought cream and added honey.

Apple and cheese

Not sure where this originated, but I have never been good at eating enough fruit. So when I discovered the deliciousness that is apple with a piece of cheese I became a big fan.

Celery and peanut butter

This taste sensation stems from my Mum getting us to eat better food as kids. She'd lather a nice chunk of peanut butter onto the celery and that would get us to eat it.

Popcorn and Maltesers

This is a fairly recent combination I've learned. My friend Mickey suggested it at the movies one time and it's amazing! Sweetness with a dash of salty!

Chocolate Sundae with hot chips

This one I remember discovering as a young teen with my mates. We'd go out BMXing and then stop off at a fast-food restaurant for lunch. As a joke, one of my mates dipped a chip in my sundae. The rest they say is history.
