Pharrell Williams' enormous hat was the undisputed star of the Grammys, but it turns out there's a story behind it.
We assumed Skateboard P was channeling Dudley Do-Right, but it was actually designed by Vivienne Westwood back in the '80s, and featured in her '82/'83 collection. She's given it several names, including the Buffalo Hat, the Mountain Hat, and the Jelly Mould Hat.
Westwood was pals with Malcolm McLaren (the Sex Pistols manager turned pioneering hip hop producer), who featured the hat prominently in the video for 'Buffalo Girls' in 1982. (Recorded with the World's Famous Supreme Team, the track is considered an early classic of the genre.) So it's not entirely out of place for Williams to be wearing the hat after all.

He bought his new at Westwood's World's End store a couple of years ago, so it's not quite vintage (if you're wondering, it set him back £95).
He did tell The Hollywood Reporter that it would have been "really stylin'" if he'd been wearing "one from the '80s", so if you happen to have one lying around, now would be an excellent time to send it to Pharrell Williams and see if he wears it to the Oscars.
