Sheppard are known the world over for their catchy pop songs, sass attitude and for Amy’s electric blue hair. But both girls, Emma and Amy, have their own distinct fashion flavour and it’s comes through everything they do.
We chatted to Emma about all things fashion, from clothing as a tool for self expression to online haters to her Mac Myth lipstick, and her answers were deliciously self-assured.
When asked about her and her sister’s individual styles, she answered, “I don't think we have a set style. Amy and I are always wearing different things. One week we could be going for the gypsy look and the next could just be right out there! One thing we love is being colourful.”
She is vocal about using fashion as a way to share herself with the world, without spelling it out. She laughed and added, “If you've met me you probably know I'm not shy in person and I think that comes across when it comes to fashion, hair and makeup. Fashion is a way to express yourself without words.”
Sheppard have had a meteoric rise to the top of the music industry and with that success comes intense public scrutiny. Being exposed like that must have shaped their styles somewhat and she agrees, “I think it has opened our eyes to many more Australian independent fashion labels, but I think fashion was something that always interested us and something we have always enjoyed.”And with fame always comes the negative flip side and people can be vicious in their criticism when commenting on appearance. Both girls are so exposed as performers to comments and opinions, the question had to be asked – have they adapted to criticism or compliments?
“It’s never easy reading or hearing negative comments about yourself, but I think if you stay true to yourself and be confident in who you are, it shouldn't matter what anyone else has to say.” Which is also reflected aptly by her style motto of “be yourself, nobody can do it better!”Her advice to fans about fashion is to just be yourself and be confident and it helps when she walks her own advice talk. Her other piece of advice to girls who look up to her style and want to look like her is simple. “It's always good to be original and to find new things. Girls should definitely be supporting local Australian designers, we have some great talent here in Australia.”
Speaking of great outfits, she mentioned that her favourite outfit was her 21st dress. “It's pink which is my favourite colour and it reminds me of having a great night with all of my friends.”
She can’t live without her Mac Myth lipstick and if she could swap wardrobes for a day with anyone, she would choose Mimi Elashiry. Why? “Just by following her on Insta I can tell she has a beautiful wardrobe.”
When asked about any style tips she could share, Emma declared, “JUST F*#&ING OWN IT!” These Sheppard sisters are women who know who they are and are not afraid to be authentically and fashionably themselves.So there you have it, the Sheppard sisters don't hold their tongue when it comes to music OR fashion.
