Dr. Martens is bringing iconic British artwork to the streets of Australia, in its latest collaboration with Tate.

The limited edition collection brings the work of Ithell Colquhoun, a provocative artist who refused to conform or compromise. The occult and nature were huge inspirations in Ithell’s work, as well as sex and gender. She was often overlooked alongside the towering male figures of surrealism. . . But with this collaboration, Dr. Martens puts her at the centre and celebrates her work.


It uses the 1460 boot as the canvas, for one of Ithell’s most expressive works: Volcanic Flare.

The first pair of Dr. Martens rolled off the production line on 1 April in 1960. It was initially a boot for workers – postmen and policemen – comfortable, durable and lightweight.


The 1460 boot in this collaboration is equipped with durable Dr. Martens construction: built on a grooved sole secured with signature yellow welt stitching. It is also tagged with the distinctive black and yellow heel loop.
