Curtin 10 Year Retrospective Review

Perth Fashion Festival
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The Curtin Ten Year Retrospective formed part of the Perth Fashion Festival, Fashion Central program at Forrest Place on Sunday 15th September.

Those of you who know me know that I respect when academia and fashion can merge, and I believe the Curtin Fashion program has achieved just that. Inspiring a generation of Perth fashion designers, we were able to see Perth labels across the spectrum: Stott & Sims, Butcher & Crow, Yan Zion (who also showed at the WA Designer Collections), Imogen Duxbury, Jocelyn Tan, Seth Cray, Emily Muco, Lauren Boyle, Farleigh-Bell Collaboration, KY Designs (Katherine Young), and even costume design, such as Isaac Lummis Costume Design, among others.

I also love when community and fashion finds a place, and the line-up by the public to see what Curtin had to offer demonstrated, the ability for Perth fashion to be accessible to the public is noteworthy on various levels.

I was particularly impressed by designs by Sooyung Yang, both under her own label and through label, Jacquard Knits — Curtin Fashion Design & Research HUB, where she has completed her PhD and designed V-bed knitting technology.

Another favourite segment of mine was the third year students, who I believe showed flair, inspiration and more than deserved to be on the runway with their contemporaries and alumni. A special mention for special pieces in the third year ‘Evening Design’ section by students Raquel Williamson, Katie O’Neill, and Keiza Soedjono, and third year Daywear by Katie O’Neill, Jessica Moro, and Sophie Tudor-Roberts — I simply cannot wait to see your futures!
