Ah, the leather jacket! Some men dare not reach too far out of the fashion safety barriers. Others take the leap of faith and attempt to pull off this classic wardrobe item.

The trick is to pick the right leather jacket, and pair it with other pieces of clothing similar to your own style – it means that you won’t look like you’re trying too hard, and at the same time give you the confidence to actually pull of the jacket. Here are 5 tips for guys looking to pull off this ultra-cool piece of clothing.

Find The Right Leather Jacket

Seems like a no brainer, doesn’t it? Well, if you’re going to look good in a leather jacket, you have to make sure you get one that actually suits you. Not all jackets are created equal – some have an abundance of zippers, others go for the refined ‘less is more’ look. A men’s leather jacket is an investment – something that will last the distance especially if you buy a reputable brand. So don’t skimp out on an imitation. That’s a sure-fire way to NOT pull of the leather look!

Keep It Simple, Stupid

Again, less it’s more. The leather jacket is a statement item of clothing in itself – it doesn’t need to be paired with any loud prints or patterns. Especially if those wearing it are unconfident that they’re pulling it off. Physical awkwardness + overly loud clothing? You might as well have stuck to hoodies. When it comes to under the top half, a simple button down shirt or t-shirt is perfectly fine. No need to test the boundaries any more.

As for the bottom half, you can’t go wrong with some dark jeans and sneakers for a casual daywear look, or some dark pants and dress shorts for a more smart casual feel. Don’t push the dress code too far though – at some point, you’ll need to leave the leather at home and suit up.

Leather Jacket Doesn’t Mean ‘Biker’

Ditch the chains, the bandana and the doc martins – the leather jacket is no longer restricted to motorbike riding scary men. Nowadays, the leather jacket can even be dressed up. Think about how it can fit into your own style, and leave the helmet hair at home.

Don’t Let The Jacket Wear You

A leather jacket needs to be worn with confidence; otherwise it looks and feels awkward. The more you feel like you’re pulling it off, the more you are. And you can only feel confident if you’ve got the right cut and fit, so again make sure you invest in a good quality jacket.

Sunglasses

Ready to kick it up a notch? There’s nothing like a leather jacket paired with some dark shades. It’s the perfect combination of cool.
Leather jackets shouldn’t be a daunting aspiration – anyone can pull them off, and they can be adapted to different styles.
