Adorn Collection's Melissa Barnes' style has consistently impressed judges at the state-wide style search Fashion At The Races.

This year, she became Thoroughbred Racing SA’s Millinery ambassador, while juggling designing her own headwear creations at Adorn Collection and motherhood. The Fashion At The Races annual style search competition moves to Strathalbyn this month, where stylish punters have the opportunity to take home a swag of prizes and progress to the State Final in May.

Here, Melissa shares her top five tips for looking chic track-side in South Australia during the warmer months:

Why summer at the races is white hot

When it’s hot, we tend to see a lot of muted, neutral looks from head-to-toe, where a white dress is paired with nude accessories, which I love. Not only is a great way to keep cool, it’s a classic look that never goes out of style. You can also incorporate blush and pastel tones.

Wide brimmed hat

But don’t be afraid to embrace colour

That’s not to say that a pop of colour doesn’t work well. Choose a hero colour and have fun with accessories and makeup. I love to pop on a pair of fake eyelashes and nails for the day. I also have a ritual of going into MAC Cosmetics and choosing a new lippy to match my outfit.

Straw hat

Make sure your headwear is weather-appropriate

Summer millinery is best if it’s straw or leather-based. Lace has also been huge during spring and will continue to be a key trend over the coming months.

Opt for cover

Brimmed hats stand out in a Fashions On The Field line up because they have classic lines and radiate with elegance from a bygone era. They are also comfortable to wear and don’t date.

Crowns

Crowning glory

Crowns have been spotted everywhere over the past year and they slow no sign of slowing in popularity. Metallic tones add a real wow-factor to outfits, while veiled headbands and visors are another take on this on-point look.

If you’re thinking of entering the Fashion At The Races – remember to have fun! “To me, winning isn’t about being better than anyone else,” says Melissa.

“It’s about being recognised for the enormous effort that’s put into your outfit with all the little details. Winning in an outfit you absolutely love is the icing on the cake, because if you enter feeling good about yourself, then you’ll walk away a winner — even without the sash! It’s completely normal to feel nervous before getting up on stage. Just take a few deep breaths and hold your head high. Confidence is the key!”

Strathalbyn Cup will be held on 17 January.
