Having barely dried off from the devastating floods that inundated the Northern Rivers, Vanessa Larry Mitchell brings a barrage of laughs to Sydney Comedy Festival with her smash-hit solo show ‘Teardrops On My Dildo’.
The queen of sass and powerhouse behind Northern Rivers roving comedy club Larry Laughs Loud has turned her literary project '50 First Dates' into an hour of award-winning, on-stage hilarity.
“It’s definitely not a show about dick pics or a slag-off about men, but there are some common things that men (some men) do that are just revolting and they should stop,” Vanessa says.
“Mind you, I’ve had a woman send me a pic of her vag too once. I didn’t even know that was a thing women did.”
‘Teardrops On My Dildo’ is Vanessa’s honest account of dating, parenting and life as a woman that has left audiences in stitches. Having conquered the Fringe festival circuit, Vanessa is more than ready to hit the stage at Sydney Comedy Festival.
"I have been getting overwhelmingly positive responses to this show, and just won 'Best Comedy' for Newcastle Fringe Festival in March 2022,” Vanessa says.
“Because of COVID, I haven't had the chance to bring this show to many festivals, so I'm really excited to be bringing it to Sydney. It feels like I'm playing with the big kids of comedy now!”
While Vanessa’s signature brand of comedy is naturally geared towards women, she is glad to see more men in her audiences.
"I've been getting more and more men to my shows, which is great,” Vanessa says.
“The title attracts more of a female audience, but the show was never intended to be for women. It's just stories and jokes about dating, parenting and being a woman in general, so everyone is welcome.”
‘Teardrops On My Dildo’ finds the humour in human tragedy, and as someone who’s experienced her share of tragedy, Vanessa knows all too well the importance of laughter in getting through life’s mishaps.
“If we are not able to look back and laugh at our darkest moments when we’re sitting on the kitchen floor, in a pile of tears, wondering how we made such a sh.t show of it all, then we might be in trouble. Relationships can rock people so hard.”
Vanessa Larry Mitchell plays Factory Theatre (Sydney Comedy Festival) 30 April-1 May.
