Urzila Carlson 2020 Australia Tour

Urzila Carlson
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Comedy genius and sweetheart of prime time tele, Urzila Carlson is bringing her brand-new stand-up show, 'Token African', to 11 cities and regional centres around the country.

Riding the coattails of 2019's Melbourne International Comedy Festival, 'Token African' solidifies her position as a household name across two continents.

Urzila will open the tour at the 2020 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, before heading to Perth, Sydney, Newcastle, Gold Coast, Adelaide, Canberra, Alice Springs, Darwin, Toowoomba, and Brisbane.

'Token African' aims at refocusing what it means to be African. Urzila's sizzling signature brand of observational and story-driven comedy will have you in stitches, as she navigates the world of modern African cultural discourse in a way that only a Token African can.

Africans have become the new must have accessory. Okay, not really, but everyone knows one, works with one or has a sister that’s dating one of us. What makes you African? Is it enough that you’re born there? Do you need to be able to dance? Why does being South African not register as African in most places? You’re thinking about it right now aren’t you? Questioning it. Africa changes people.

Urzila is a much-loved familiar face on Network Ten's 'Have You Been Paying Attention?', and 2020 will see the release of her first solo Netflix special. Urzila continues to stack up accolades year after year. Earlier this year, Urzila was awarded the Rielly Comedy Award by The Variety Artists Club of New Zealand. Last year saw Urzila nominated for Australia's Helpmann Award for Best Comedy Performer, and she nabbed the 2017 Sydney Comedy Festival Director's Choice Award. Urzila's acclaim is expanding with no signs of slowing down, and its sure-fire that 'Token African' will bring on the next slew of international recognition.
