Two Man Tarantino Review @ Brisbane Comedy Festival 2023

'Two Man Tarantino'
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

‘Two Man Tarantino' continued their residency at the Powerhouse on Friday night (19 May) for the annual Brisbane Comedy Festival. They brought finger guns, expired popcorn, laughs and a fun time.

The show told a tale of the last employee and last customer of the last Red Apple video rental store in Australia. They compete, recreating scenes from Quentin Tarantino’s movies, to see who is his biggest fan.

The enjoyable back and forth between the customer (Emily Kristopher) and shopkeeper (Stephen Hirst) saw them re-enacting 'Pulp Fiction''s famous twist, 'Reservoir Dogs' car scenes and numerous more that were hilarious and entertaining to watch. The scenes replayed in my head as the performers acted them out. It was a good trip down memory lane as I had not seen a few of the films in some time.

It reminded me of being in the lounge room with friends, with a few glasses of wine quoting and referencing every part of the films you can think of; but this time done professionally. There were a few surprises towards the end of the show, but I will leave that for you to discover.

I enjoyed the set design, which itself was a reference to Tarantino, as he puts the same Red Apple cigarettes in his films. The set not only functioned as a backdrop but was key to multiple jokes, mimes and props. The stage space was used creatively, giving an almost 180 arena experience. This kept the show engaging for the whole audience.

'Two Man Tarantino' was a thoroughly entertaining, dramatic night. I walked out in my yellow jumpsuit, short black bob and cowboy boots with a smile on my face. If you are looking for a fun night and have watched a few of Tarantino’s films, you won’t be disappointed.
