The Stevenson Experience Want You Laughing Till You're Crying

The Stevenson Experience
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Three-time Adelaide Fringe 'Best Comedy' nominees The Stevenson Experience (Benjamin and James Stevenson) have been here, there and everywhere.

The world has witnessed the musical and comedy talents of this identical twin duo for ten years.

They perform to an average of 20,000 people a year and will, in 2022, give audiences their best bits in 'Greatest Twits' at Adelaide Fringe.

The pair have placed in the Grand Final of every national comedy competition in Australia since their debut in 2011. They've performed with the likes of Amy Schumer, Jimeoin, Matt Okine, Dave Hughes and more, solidifying their place in the hallowed hall of Australian comedy fame.

We get a bit more information about 'Greatest Twits', The Stevenson Experience's one-night-only affair at Fringe, from one half of The Stevenson Experience, James.

Tell us a bit about ‘Greatest Twits’.
'Greatest Twits' is all our greatest hits – a rapid fire, whip-smart hour of comedy packed with all the fast-paced, laugh-out-loud songs, stand-up and brotherly bickering and one-upmanship that we’ve become known for!

Why have you chosen to do a ‘best of’ show for this year’s festivities in particular?
It just so happened that we only had one night we could stop in Adelaide for our tour this year – so we figured what better way to spend it than to get a huge venue and go for it for one night only.

When it comes to writing new material. . . Where do you begin? What’s the jumping off point?
We write a lot about what happens to us – what we find annoying or funny in our daily lives. Basically if we can make each other laugh – we are on the right track! This year one of our main rules is to not talk about COVID.

What’s your favourite piece of music to perform live?
This is such a tough question – this show has some very catchy tracks in it and we love hearing our audiences singing our songs weeks later. We mix it up with piano, guitar, rap, club bangers, it’s hard to pin down a favourite.

Why do you think ‘Greatest Twits’ fits within the Adelaide Fringe programme?
Nobody does what we do. We are unashamedly comedy – easily as many jokes and laughs as any stand-up, but we bring a different edge to it with some songs, some narrative and our brotherly bond. There are other music acts, other comedy acts, even other musical comedy acts, who are all fantastic at Fringe – but when it comes down to it – no one does what we do.

What are you most looking forward to about being a part of the festival this year?
Very excitingly – this is our first year at The Garden Of Unearthly Delights – so we are so excited to perform in such an iconic venue.

How are you hoping audiences respond to your show? What’s going through the mind of an audience member leaving the show who has had your intended reaction to it?
We want them howling with laughter, exhausted by the end of it due to so many jokes. No message or feeling sad at the end of this – we want you to leave thoroughly entertained and wishing we left you a bit more time to breathe.

The Stevenson Experience play The Box at The Garden Of Unearthly Delights (Adelaide Fringe) 5 March.
