Brisbane's own ImproMafia has been serving up improvised laughs for over a decade.
This March sees its popular Brisbane Comedy Festival show 'The Pineapple Club' return to the Brisbane Powerhouse. Got questions? Sure you do! You seem an inquisitive sort. ImproMafia's Amy Currie has answers.
So what's this improv thing, then?
We're glad you asked! Improv, or impro (call it what you like, we're not fussy), is the age-old art of making stuff up on the spot. We're a group of talented comedians who can think on our feet – remember that cheeky, witty class clown? We were all that kid. We grew up and found one another and formed a really non-threatening gang.
Okay. Pineapple Club, you say?
That's right. We're taking over the Comedy Channel Laughter Lounge each and every Friday and Saturday night of the Brisbane Comedy Festival from 7:45pm for some improvised variety – no scripts allowed.
And you're going to make us laugh?
Heck yes, Sir or Madam. We'll bravely and boldly face all kinds of games and audience challenges based on your suggestions. We can pull songs out of the air, compose sonnets at the drop of a hat and sass one another with the kind of one-liners most people think of twenty minutes too late. Sadly, we can't dance, but hey: we'll give it a go if necessary. We're not afraid to look ridiculous. In fact, it's our natural state.
And it's free? Really?
Really. There might even be fabulous prizes.
Oh, wow! Like a car? Could I win a car?
No! But do you like... tinned pineapple?
Yes! That's better than a car!
Good. We're going to be friends.
