The Judith Wright Centre presents two new productions,The Birdmann In The Events Of Momentous Timing on March 22 and 23, and Mixtape Theatre Collective's Escape From The Breakup Forest from March 16 to 23.
Drawing inspiration from silent film and noir with magic, slapstick and escapology, The Birdmann delivers sharp one- liners and daring, genre-defying routines to reconstruct memories from the clues around him. Having toured to over fifteen countries worldwide, The Birdmann, aka. Trent Baumann, completes this tour with special guest Tigerlil, known for her electrifying blend of circus, sideshow, vaudeville and burlesque, has performed with knives, beds of nails, marionettes and cocktail shakers among other items.
Mixtape Theatre Collective hail from Toowoomba and make their Brisbane debut at the Judith Wright Centre with Escape From The Breakup Forest, a comedy about getting over yourself. Writer and lead actor Steve Pirie admits that this comedy about getting over yourself started as a way for him to make peace with some past relationship hang-ups, but this quickly dissolved.
“A show all about me would be tragically boring, so I took a more universal approach and combined it with my love of a hero’s quest. You instead get this absurd, weird little show that is quite sweet at its heart."
Fiercely proud of their regional roots, Steve says that Mixtape Theatre Collective was born from a shared vision of the type of work the four members admire and what they wanted their own work to say. “We believe that our geography and what we live around bleeds into our work and we're really excited to be a part of the independent movement, both in Toowoomba and the wider region.”
