Beloved stand-up comedian and TV personality Cal Wilson has died at the age of 53, as confirmed by a post on her social media.
Cal passed away today (11 October) surrounded by friends and family in hospital, following a short illness.
“Cal was loved by her family, friends, fans and peers and a huge hole has been torn in the heart of our community,” the post read.
The post was accompanied by a painted portrait of Cal, by Andrea Heulin, which won the Archibald Prize’s Packing Room Prize earlier this year.
Many have commented on Cal’s passing through social media.
“I can’t even comprehend this right now. The most divine, radiant person who I have watched, admired and worked alongside,” Shaynna Blaze from ‘Selling Houses Australia’ and ‘The Block’ wrote. “This is heartbreaking. So much love to her husband, son and family. This is a very very sad day.”
"Can't believe it. A beautiful human gone too soon. Thinking of all her loved ones," comedian Daniel Connell said.
Fellow New Zealand actor and comedian Rhys Darby commented too: “Unbelievable. She was beautiful in every way. an amazing talent, such a quick brain and so much style and taste. This hurts hard.”
Cal Wilson was an extremely well-known figure on the comedy circuit, playing Melbourne International Comedy Festival 14 times throughout her career, as well as being a member of its board.
