One of Australia's rising stars of comedy, Sean Conway, will present his new show '100%' as part of this year's Newcastle Fringe.
It's a dark, twisted show about love, family, religion, sickness and hope, and 100 per cent of the proceeds from tickets sold will go to multiple charities.
Sean recounts facing the prospect of losing his mother to sickness in 2019.
Here, he tells us a little bit more about what to expect in '100%', including which charities he'll be putting the money towards.
What kinds of topics will you be covering in '100%'?
It’s all about the highs and lows of 2019, mostly revolved around my mother’s sickness, while also dealing with being sued for a joke and preparing for my first MMA fight.
How would you describe your comedy style?
I try to find the lighter side of dark topics, but this show is my biggest project yet, and it’s something that I’m really proud of that is also giving back to communities I’m performing in.
One hundred per cent of the proceeds from the show go to charity! Tell us a bit about that.
Yeah, 100 per cent of my ticket sales will be donated to charity (Orange Sky, Centre For Hope, Soul Cafe, and Got Your Back Sista). The events of 2019 were pretty horrific and to be able to turn that dark period in my life into not only a funny comedy show, but also have a positive impact on communities I perform in, feels like the universe is evening out.
What made you decide to do that?
Trying to create the yin to a very depressing yang.
And what is it you love about doing comedy?
The groupies! Nah, the creative process and to be able to showcase years of hard work to fresh audiences, who hopefully want to buy me a beer after the show.
You've been playing the show in a few places. How has it been received so far?
It’s been received really well, it’s been building and building momentum and I'm really looking forward to showcasing it in Newcastle.
What's your goal when it comes to presenting this material?
The goal is to present a great comedy show, and if I can raise some funds for some amazing charities, even better.
Describe the show with a song lyric.
“My mum got sick and now I’m raising money for charity for my sanity.” – The Baby Boys.
