Rory Lowe has a story to tell. It's not your average story, and he's not your average guy.
He'll be telling the story as part of Perth Comedy Festival, and here he tells us all about what to expect.
This show focuses around an extraordinary story. Sum it up for us?
I was on my way to a gig in Broome from Perth and my car broke down. About 200km inland of Port Hedland, which isn't the nicest place. No Ubers there. Basically I was stuck in the outback for about eight hours before two meth heads picked me up and drove me to Broome in a stolen car. The story is actually absurd and I still don't believe it. To be honest barely anyone did when I first told them. So now I have to leave bit outs, tame it.
Katy Perry is listed as one of the things that saved you… How?!
I thought these two cookers that picked me up were going to kill me and bury me in the desert. I was petrified of them until Jesse, the girl in the passenger seat, put on a CD and Katy Perry's 'California Gurls' started playing. There isn't anything as comforting as watching the people you thought were going to murder you, sing KP at the top of their lungs. No one is getting killed to a Katy Perry song. From that moment on we were friends. Best meth heads I ever met.
Did you get to do the show in Broome that you were heading to after all?
I did but I was about an hour and a half late, Chris 'The Bloke' Franklin saved my ass by doing a two hour set before me.
How many years have you been doing comedy, and what lessons have you learned along the way?
About six years now. If you have the opportunity, always use air travel.
When did you make the decision to turn this big story into a show?
About halfway through the experience. They whole 'adventure' took three weeks because I had to hitch hike back to my car after the show and then put my car in the mechanics. The day I got home, I called all my mates and told them the whole story. Took me four hours. It was the best-worst thing thats ever happened.
To you, what are the things that make a good story great?
I think there's two things. Firstly, I think you need to be able to create an atmosphere. You need to relocate the audience into the moment you're talking about. Make them believe that they are there with you when it all happened. Secondly, a soundtrack by Katy Perry.
What advice do you have for aspiring comedians?
Write. Thats it hey, just write.
Why is 'The Hitch Hiker's Guide To Australia' "unlike any show you've seen"?
Because I do the whole show naked... And my penis is massive. Ok, both of those are lies. It's a real life survival story with a contemporary twist that will genuinely enrich your life if you decide to indulgence in it... Or maybe you'll hate it. I don't know what you're into. It's a very immersive show and I feel like there is a nice balance of suspense and laughter within it that rounds it off as something a little more special than just jokes.
