Rory Lowe Is Ready To Tell Melbourne A Story

No phone. No water. No way of survival. Two 'meth heads'.

Rory Lowe was in this very circumstance once upon a time. Unless he hitch hiked 1,500km with two drug addicts in a stolen car for two weeks, he may not be alive today to tell the tale.

'The Hitch Hiker's Guide To Australia' is a true story that tells of near-death experiences with crocodiles, police pursuits, and two 'meth heads' traumatising the young man in the desert.

More importantly, though, it attacks any preconceptions and judgements we all admittedly make based on the appearances of others.

“I thought these two cookers that picked me up were going to kill me and bury me in the desert. I was petrified of them until Jesse, the girl in the passenger seat, put on a CD and Katy Perry's 'California Gurls' started playing,” Rory told scenestr of the beginnings of this story.

“No one is getting killed to a Katy Perry song. From that moment on we were friends. Best meth heads I ever met.”

One would think an experience like this would be best forgotten about and tucked under the rug forever, but Rory decided to mould it into his stand-up sets and eventually craft it into a show. But at what stage did he decide it was good material?

“About halfway through the experience,” Rory admits.

“The whole 'adventure' took three weeks because I had to hitch hike back to my car after the show and then put my car in the mechanics. The day I got home, I called all my mates and told them the whole story. Took me four hours. It was the best-worst thing that's ever happened.”

Having toured internationally over the past year including doing shows in Singapore, Malaysia, and Pakistan, Rory is super keen to get into Melbourne International Comedy Festival and let the people of Melbourne in on his insane story for the first time ever.

Rory Lowe plays Khokolat Bar from 27 March-4 April.
