There’s singing, dancing, sketch comedy and a whole heap of references to stitching a mouth to an ass in this year’s offering from cabaret comedy duo Mel & Sam, and every bit of it is bloody brilliant.
While many shows at the festival feature random titles, thought of months before that are passed off as unrelated to the shows content, 'The Platonic Human Centipede' is a title and concept that is well and truly embraced by Mel & Sam, working it into their opening tune and well and truly setting the brilliantly crude tone for the evening.
Even at a late time slot on a Thursday night, the audience absolutely ate what Mel & Sam were dishing up – every little bit.
These musical theatre girlies at heart used their strong vocals to deliver snappy and sassy lyrics about topics the crowd might never have imagined songs could – or should exist from. And everyone there was, without a doubt, stoked with the unhinged vibes on offer.
This show was so gay, and I bloody loved it. And I was stoked to be surrounded by an audience who so clearly felt the same. The hour-long show absolutely flew past because we were all having way too much fun. And to top it off, the delightful chemistry between Mel & Sam was a total joy to watch.
A song and sketch on polyamory absolutely nailed it, and while the duo flagged that the content might not be relatable, damn, it was a bit of an ‘if you know, you know’ moment, and the satire was so shamelessly on point.
The very queer, very silly finale was perfect – giving audiences a new take on a classic musical movie from our childhoods – but to mention any more would spoil the genius, hilarious ending.
You just need to go and investigate for yourself – and do it now, before their shows inevitably pack out and become impossible to snag a ticket to!
