Review: He Huang @ Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2024

He Huang
National Arts and Comedy Editor. Based in Melbourne.
Pop culture, pop music and gaming are three of Jesse’s biggest passions. Lady Gaga, Real Housewives and The Sims can almost sum him up – but he also adores a night at the cinema or a trip to the theatre.

The world was treated to a hilarious three-minute set from rising comedian He Huang in 2022, when she auditioned for ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ and it went viral. Her star has been on the rise ever since.

In ‘Tiger Daughter vs The World’, He brings all the laughs and sass television audiences were treated to in her audition, and then some. It’s a hilarious hour of reflection, as He takes us through familial mishaps, backpacking disasters, and biting political commentary.

He’s stand-up style is brilliant, and her storytelling abilities are on full display here. You’re hooked as soon as she begins – and her charm is infectious.

The humour is intelligent, and there are some interesting observations regarding gender, skin colour, and politics – and where these three things place us in the world.

He discusses her upbringing with us, and how her family’s views versus her own perspective in the world have left her feeling caught somewhere in the middle. This is really fascinating to unpack, and He does it in a way which feels truly authentic. . . Despite the fact that her parents describe her career as a stand-up comic as ‘standing in front of people and lying to them’.

This is a solid hour from a comedian who has come so far already, and will no doubt go even further. It’s a sassy, punchline-heavy set with an edge – a fantastic addition to this year’s Comedy Festival offering.
