It’s always a delight to experience an Elf Lyons show.
A master of her craft, Elf holds the audience in the palm of her hand. . . Or should I say, wing (seeing as she’s dressed as a parrot), from beginning to end in her captivating, madcap retelling of 'Swan Lake', simply titled 'Swan'.
With high energy throughout, Elf weaves a tale in unhinged broken French(ish) language, which of course leads to many belly laughs. Her physicality is phenomenal, a skill which comes into play brilliantly as she leaps and twists about the stage in a rough attempt to recreate and unpack the ballet.
With comfort and confidence on stage, Elf is also playfully inviting in a way that encourages front row audience members to get involved with ease. This is an impressive feat given that most people are deeply terrified by a little audience involvement, but Elf’s ability to simply make this happen comes down to the welcoming environment that she has crafted as part of her show set-up.
But even if you’re just watching along and not playing a part in saving Elf from the looming death of hitting the back wall, you will have a fantastic time at 'Swan'. This show is simply joyful. There’s enough action to keep you hooked in throughout and there is never a lull in the jokes or the beautiful chaos.
There are smart quips and clever commentary around gender dynamics and the roles expected of women, but for me, the best bit of the show is the sheer silly happiness that emanates from Elf and flows right into every audience member. I wish this show upon everyone – well, every adult, given the sweary nature and nudity involved.
A worthy way to spend an evening out this Comedy Festival, 'Swan' is simply gorgeous.
