Plant Based Disgrace Has Their Toast And Avo Too At Adelaide Fringe

'Plant Based Disgrace'
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Brisbane punk cabaret duo Jay Bloodsworth and Sharmanee Jenkins are the daughters-in-law your mum used to warn you about – now, they are Plant Based Disgrace (PBD).

These days, Jay and Sharmanee are the uncomfortable, plant-eating dinner guest with a twice-pierced nose. The sort of girlfriend your brother brings home, who has a kid and 'does theatre'. Having said that, they're not that weird, honest.

Jay, who also produces the show, explains how Plant Based Disgrace sprouted from an idea and has grown into a thriving, living organism.

"While working day jobs in a windowless yoga studio basement, we were two theatre performers pushed over the edge by one too many Cheesymite scrolls and no other vegetarian options nearby,” Jay says.

“We had recently bought ukuleles and were both headlong into bad relationships. PBD started as a fun way to riff about our real and artist lives combined, and it took us another four years (and a baby) before the idea really felt ready to stage. Now we’re a family band. My son travels with me when we work shows."

Between Sharmanee's sweet pipes and vegan-butter-wouldn't-melt-in-her mouth face, and Jay's tongue-in-cheek lyricism about the struggles of being a single mum, Plant Based Disgrace are sure to be your new best friends as they thrill you with an evening of crude giggles, junk food, snuggles and live music.

Rising from their basement studio, Plant Based Disgrace hit Adelaide Fringe after honing their craft in theatre productions right across the Sunshine State.

“We’ve been involved in theatre festivals across Queensland before but wanted to step it up this
year,” Sharmanee adds.

“We’ve heard great things about the Adelaide scene, and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to test the waters outside of our windowless comfort zone.”

Plant Based Disgrace play Basement Bar at Hotel Richmond 6-8 March and The Loft At Brompton Hotel 11-14 March.
