Not all is what is seems at this buzzing beauty salon.
All will be revealed when queen Pamela, stylist Tiffany Rose and junior assistant Bronwyn hit the stage to celebrate the vulnerability and strength of those trying to trim, cut, and style their way through an unforgiving world.
Here, Co-Writer and Co-Devisor and lead role (Pamela) Donna Gray chats about the show.
This show is 'an interactive comedy set in a beauty salon'. Sounds brilliant… Tell us more!
Pamela is in the finals of The Salon Of The Year Competition. The judge could arrive at any moment. Tiffany is in love with Dante from Cutting Edge and Bronwyn has some big news. Tears, laughter and love are in the hair.
Where did the idea for 'Pamela's Palace' come from?!
I came up with the original concept for a one-woman show about a vintage '60s hairdresser, Pamela. I chose a hairdresser because they are both a gossip and therapist rolled into one – perfect for an interactive show. There is also much humour and havoc to be had when it comes to haircuts.
Who is Pamela and if she had a famous celebrity BFF, who would it be and why?
Pamela is a glammed-up wonder woman with three cats and a basement dedicated to her love of Chardonnay. She is efficient and business-minded and adores being an entrepreneur in the hair and beauty industry, paving the way forward for like-minded hair aficionados. She would hang out with Dannii Minogue and Nicky Clarke..
And if she were to run for President… What would her campaign slogan be?
'Never Give Up, Never Surrender!'
Are there any particular influences when it comes to the comedy and general vibe of the show?
We are inspired by physical comedy and clown, the Gaulier sort not the white-face-child-fear-mongering kind… Basically embracing our inner idiot! Our vibe is 'Smack The Pony' meets 'Strictly Ballroom'. We love improvising with a crowd, and when it works it’s often so hilarious that we incorporate it into future shows.
You studied acting over in London and have even travelled the world as an actor. Have you been to Australia before? If so, what do you love about it and if not, what are you keen to see/do?
Yes, I've toured Australia playing Sybil in 'Faulty Towers The Dining Experience'. I'm so excited to return playing Pam.
Do you have any plans at this stage to do a follow-up show or a separate show featuring the same characters?
'Pamela's Palace' is a new show, we've just redeveloped it for 2019 with some fab new original musical numbers. We plan to tour the current show and then do some filming with the same characters, so yes the follow up could easily see the Pams on a girlie trip to Bonnie Doon.
