Michelle Brasier Review @ Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2023

Michelle Brasier
Alicia is former South Aussie living in Melbourne. She has been sharing her opinions online about comedy, theatre, and films for the past twelve years.

The show begins from the moment you enter the room as Michelle (gently) accosts audience members asking their first name (and occasionally last name and place of residence).

Exploding with glee when she finds a first name match, she digs a little deeper and continues the search. This glorious little technique gets the crowd comfortable from the get-go, feeling like they are a part of her endeavour and the eventual journey she takes you on.

Performing to a packed audience in a gorgeous intimate theatre, Michelle has everyone eating out of her palms (which will themselves get a few mentions throughout the show) from the moment she commands the stage. With her incredible presence, wonderful voice and captivating story telling style, Michelle is a delight to experience. 'Legacy' sees her explore the idea of what her own legacy might look like and what her life might also look like if she had chosen another path for herself. It’s a simple enough concept but the approach she chooses keeps the audience gripped throughout and they join her on a journey to solve a mystery, just as an added bonus.

It must be noted though, if you are a little squeamish when it comes to discussions of blood, pus, ooze and icky medical procedures, there might be a few moments that could be just a little too much for you. If you can handle a few overly graphic descriptions though, this show is more than worth bearing a few moments of discomfort for; after all, Michelle lived through the discomfort – the least the crowd can do is hear about it, because the payoff in the form of a delightful story is well worth it. Enhanced by the addition of some original songs that allow Michelle to display her impressive vocal range, 'Legacy' is a well-rounded show in so many ways.

As if it wasn’t already fabulous enough, at the end of the show we are informed that on most nights Michelle’s dog Eva joins her on stage. Sadly, she was a little sleepy on this particular night but knowing that you could have the chance to experience a show with a pup soaking up part of the limelight should be a tempting extra for many punters choosing between shows to see this Comedy Festival. If a hilarious person isn’t enough for you, throw in a pooch and you've got yourself the perfect show!
