Preparing to tour with his new show ‘Have That’, Luke Heggie discusses idiots, the Sydney Opera House and getting material from the construction site.
Luke’s new show focuses primarily on 'dickheads'.
“Well, that pretty much sums it up. It’s all my gripes with modern idiots, like every show I’ve done. There seems to be no end to how many there are, so I’ve got plenty to talk about. The amount of idiots has expanded exponentially. Average is the new champion, so dickhead is the new average.”
“I think I was born sick of idiots, not that I exclude myself from that. So, it’s more of the same, just more stuff I’m sick of. I don't know if I find too many people agreeing on everything, but there is a lit bit of something for everyone in the show.”
There was a strange message on the show’s website... ‘miss Luke Heggie at your own peril’.
“Oh okay. I didn't write that, but maybe if I see you go to another show, I'll bash you. That's a bit of peril, hahaha! Whoever wrote that thinks I am a bit more up myself than I am. Obviously, you're not in danger. Unless I go and bash you for seeing something else and talking about it,” he laughs.
Luke has been on ‘The Project’ and ABC, as well as having one of his shows professionally filmed. But for Luke, live comedy is the only real representation.
“Live stand-up is second to none. It makes such a difference seeing it live, anyone I see doing TV stand-up, it can be great. But it's not a fair depiction of what it's actually like to be there. You see some great comedians die on TV, but live they are great and same the other way around. A TV snippet is what brings people in, but the live is the only way.”
Luke works in construction when he's away from the stage, which means more material for his shows.
“I work on building sites when I’m not touring. It keeps me busy, it keeps my head clear. Builders say some great stuff during the day. It's very good for that. That's where the good content is, it's out in the real world. The relentless bullying all day that you give and take on a building site is pretty good for material, I think.”
The comedian has also performed at an iconic Australian landmark, but it’s not all glitz and glory.
“I've been to the Sydney Opera House a couple of times, the first time I was supporting Stephen Merchant and when I was on the bus home later on, I couldn't even find my Opal card and I had no cash. He's wandered off with a blonde under each arm, meanwhile, I'm stuffing a party pie in my face and going to catch a bus and not even paying for it. It's a fairly thankless thing. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s a great gig.”
