Joel Creasey @ Brisbane Comedy Festival 2017 Review

Joel Creasey
National Arts and Comedy Editor. Based in Melbourne.
Pop culture, pop music and gaming are three of Jesse’s biggest passions. Lady Gaga, Real Housewives and The Sims can almost sum him up – but he also adores a night at the cinema or a trip to the theatre.

Joel Creasey is a comedic force to be reckoned with.

His show 'Poser' at Brisbane Comedy Festival (23 March) opened with a rather triumphant and celebratory video slideshow of all his accomplishments over the years; most notably his experience in the African jungle for 'I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here'.

“I'm not a very creative comedian,” he confessed only a minute into his set. “This is just an hour of me calling celebrities fat.”

Although that received a laugh of approval from the audience as if it was perfectly okay to listen to for an hour, Joel's show was much more.

It's one thing for a comedian to stand there and tell jokes, but so much of their success depends on the execution and presentation. In these areas, Joel excelled. It was as though we were listening to a hilarious friend telling us simultaneously believable yet completely insane stories. We heard about his ridiculous conversations with the OG Marcia Brady (Maureen McCormick) in the African jungle, and we cringed over his sexual experience with an apartment full of Trump supporters.

When Joel was explaining something exciting or terrifying, he was completely taken over by the story and delivered it with the perfect amount of energy to hype the crowd up for the punchline.

Joel took a moment to honour comedy legend Joan Rivers and 'Star Wars' alumnae Carrie Fisher, both of whom he met and worked with before they passed: “I need to stop working with my idols, because they die straight after!” he joked at one point.

'Poser' was a brilliantly delivered, fast-paced hour of anecdotes, pop culture commentary and reflection. Joel Creasey's comedic timing and storytelling methods are on an international level, and it's clear that he's destined for huge success not only in Australia, but internationally as well.

After all, he did get recognised in Amsterdam once... But that's a story he'll have to tell you.
