Australia's favourite adopted son Jimeoin has spent the better part of 30 years making us laugh with his hilarious observations on everyday life.
Jimeoin has been a national feature since the 1990s and is a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where he made his debut in 1993. This year sees Jimeoin back on the road for another round of shows.
Jimeoin's Australian appearances are part of his most recent tour, which include Melbourne Comedy Festival and Sydney Comedy Festival among others, for his new hour of stand-up comedy 'Result!'.
While some comedians try to make people think or enlighten the audience somehow, these lofty aims are not what Jimeoin has in mind for 'Result!'.
“It's just really a lot of nonsense and you're none the wiser at the end of it all,” he says.
“It's just a daft show, that's the idea of it, and it's a fun show. It's not political and it never really has been political. It's an hour show that I hope people will come by and have a good laugh at. I haven't had a go at anybody other than myself.”
That perhaps is the enduring appeal of Jimeoin: His comedy poses as nothing other than what it is and doesn't try to be better than anyone.
The only person being laughed at is Jimeoin, and usually because he's making fun of himself. He is his own favourite target for comedy, and nobody loves the self-deprecating humour more than Australians. Except maybe the English.
But it can take time to be funny, with Jimeoin spending up to two months writing and refining new shows he puts together.
“Through the month of July I usually condense all of my thoughts and try to put them into a show,” he explains.
“Normally that takes a month and then I do all these warm-up up shows that lead into it. Then I perform the show for a month as well, so at the end of that two-month period you've got a new show. So it takes two months really.”
Moving to Australia in his early 20s, Jimeoin professes a real love for Australia and its people, having toured metropolitan and regional Australia extensively. For Jimeoin, Australians make for great comedy fodder.
“They're [Australians] gold, they're an amazing group of people,” he says. “I find them very funny. I like country Australia too, I always find all sorts of people. Really interesting.”
