Canadian-born, Australian-raised comedian Jack Druce is supplying audiences with a little misguidance.
Now in its fifth year, the Brisbane Comedy Festival has gained a reputation as a stepping stone for emerging stars. Druce is hoping to be the next one. “This is the first year I have done it. It's certainly gained a reputation from a comedian’s point of view, and I have really wanted to do it. I have heard the best things about it, so I am really excited to [be] included this year.”
Though his show is titled Unqualified Life Coach, Jack doesn’t want anyone thinking he’s offering any genuine life advice. “It's very loosely about me trying to get my life organised in a way. It's less about positive psychology and more about if you can utilise spite to get something done, make the most of that. It's a less positive show about being positive.”
Jack has recently returned from a trip to the US with Michael Hing – fellow host of The Druce And Hing Podcast — where they encountered the wrath of New York City’s Hurricane Sandy. But don’t worry: He handled it in true Gen Y fashion. “It was weird ‘cause I wanted to watch as much comedy in New York as I could, but you're initially disappointed. Then you’re angry at yourself for being disappointed when you see the scale of what's going on. It's like, ‘I can't go see the comedian I want because the world's ending’.”
Now back in Australia, Jack is ready to ponder self improvement — and reflect on his biggest breakthrough so far. “I did a gig at the end of the Melbourne Comedy Festival last year. I had got used to performing to small audiences and there is a showcase at the end of the festival where you just do five minutes. There were 400 people there and everything went over perfectly. It was like how it would have happened if they were making a movie about the Comedy Festival; it would have been a perfectly timed happy ending.”
