The 'Maracas From Caracas' makes a grand return to the stand-up comedy festival circuit.
In 'Happy Papi', it's clear that comedian (and Australia's favourite Venezuelan) Ivan Aristeguieta has a spring in his step – and what live performer wouldn't? It's finally becoming possible to get back on stage and perform for adoring audiences.
If you've never seen Ivan on stage, you've most likely seen him over the years on shows like 'Have You Been Paying Attention?', 'The Project', 'Celebrity Name Game', 'Hughesy, We Have A Problem' and 'The Living Room'.
It's an understatement to say the self-proclaimed 'food nerd' is happy to be able to make people laugh on stage again.
Here, we chat with him about his aptly-named show, 'Happy Papi’.
What’s your new show all about?
It’s about dealing with uncertainty and growing up with a psychiatrist father and a psychologist mother.
For those new to Ivan, how would you describe your comedy?
Lighthearted, happy, fun, gluten free, carnivore and vegan friendly.
Apart from writing this material, what have you been up to since the 2021 festival circuit?
I’ve been hosting 'About This Much – Live', a follow-along cooking party on Zoom.
What’s the most bizarre hobby/interest you picked up during the lockdowns?
After lockdown 2020 my girlfriend and I became hardcore fans of Sumo wrestling. We have watched over ten tournaments so far and have our personal favourite Rikishis (sumo wrestler).
What has inspired you to write this new material?
Every year I write about the most important event I’ve had that year. Dealing again with an old friend named 'uncertainty' was undoubtedly the most important one.
How are you hoping audiences respond to it?
Laughing, and recommending it!
Where’s the most unexpected place you have recently found happiness?
ALDI, I went in to get some eggs and walked out with a telescope. Happy days!
What quick-fire advice do you have for someone seeking happiness right now?
Lower your expectations about everything.
