Heartfelt High Review @ Brisbane Comedy Festival 2019

'Heartfelt High'
Gabbi has watched Brisbane's comedy, film and arts scene thrive since joining scenestr in 2015. Catch her at the Powerhouse with a G&T in hand any day of the week.

Remember when the Discman was your pride and joy, posters of NSYNC and the Bangles plastered your walls, double denim made you double as cool, and landlines were the only way to contact your friends?

ImproMafia takes you back to the glory days of bad fashion, great music, and those memorable high school afternoons in detention with their newest show, 'Heartfelt High!'

Using a suggestion from the audience to kick start the show, the ImproMafia comedic team brought the imaginary halls of the local '90s high school to life. Complete with romance, drama, cat fights, and a sprinkle of satanic spells, this was the nostalgic trip down memory lane that left the audience in fits of laughter from the opening act.

It just didn’t hit the mark for us that night. It could have been the audience input (difficult improvisation cues result in difficult improvisation execution?), or it could have been the lack of team chemistry throughout the show.

The characters were built slowly, making it hard for the audience to grasp what was happening. Similarly, the storyline was difficult to grasp, and short scenes made it hard to interpret who was who and why.

They say that improv is built on the audience momentum, and maybe the lack of interaction with the audience affected the overall performance.

However, these guys have been dubbed one of the best, so it is only natural to assume they know their stuff, and guess that we might have been there on a difficult night.

You can't win them all! Here's a bunch of ImproMafia love we've given over the years.
