Stand-up comedian and professional actress, Hannah Gadsby has graced the stage of this year's Brisbane Comedy Festival with her brand new, hour-long show of stand-up comedy.
Entitled 'Donkey', viral fans of Gadsby will know that the show is a lot more than a few jokes about the Equus africanus asinus. With her only prop on stage being a bicycle covered in fairy lights, which she claimed is there purely for taxation purposes, Gadsby only needed a couple of sheets of taped-down notes and her amazing comedic styling's to get the audience laughing.
Focusing on her trademark brand of self-deprecating and heartbreaking humour, Gadsby announced early on that the donkey is, in fact, a metaphor for herself. Joking that throughout her entire career she has been able to make people laugh at her mental illnesses, Gadsby announced that a recent discovery might have put her career in jeopardy.
After a recent visit to a new psychiatrist, Gadsby discovered that after years of being diagnosed and medicated for depression, her depression was not the cause of her behaviour. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is now to blame for Gadsby's unusual brain patterns. This information had Gadsby worried about whether or not she would still be able to make audience's laugh at her expense.
However, if 'Donkey' is anything to go by it looks like she isn't going to have any issues. With a focus on taking more time to look after her mental health, Gadsby's new show is filled with revelations and the trials and tribulations of her everyday life. From doing the dishes to visiting possibly the worst cafe I have ever heard of, Hannah Gadsby has put together a new show that will not disappoint.
Whether you love watching her in 'Please Like Me' or have seen her previous comedy routines, you simply have to check her new show out.
