Dane Simpson Loves Sharing Silly Experiences And Good Laughs

Dane Simpson
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Since Wagga Wagga comedy king Dane Simpson burst on to the scene in 2015, he's experienced a stratospheric rise in the industry.

Appearing on screens and stages across the country and even overseas, Dane's dizzying schedule has kept him booked and busy for the best part of the last nine years. Part of his roster of activities for 2024 includes, of course, a stop at the iconic Adelaide Fringe, where he'll present 'Always Was, Always Will Be... Funny'.

The show was launched at Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2023, and now Dane sets his sites on South Australia for another round.

Here, we chat to Dane ahead of the season.

Who is Dane Simpson?
I am a comedian. I live in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. I am a proud Gamilaraay man. My family is from Walgett, outback New South Wales.

And who would you say your comedy is for?
My comedy is for everyone! I hope everyone who comes to my shows has an awesome time. I recently went overseas to the UK and India. It’s been a whirlwind of laughs. Great to be in another country and share some silly experiences.

Do you have a figure in the industry you’ve always looked up to for inspiration with your work? If so, who?
I love a range of comedians. All super inspiring. The crazy thing is watching these people on TV when I was growing up and now I call them friends!

What are you bringing to Adelaide Fringe in 2024?
I’ll be bringing my new show! 'Always Was, Always Will Be… Funny'. I’m super excited to have a good laugh with the people of Adelaide!

What is it about Adelaide you love most?
I love the people of Adelaide! Always up for a laugh and a good time. I’m from a country town in New South Wales and it reminds me of home. It’s about being surrounded by good people in a great community.

You launched this show at Melbourne International Comedy Festival last year. What was that opening reception like?
The show went bananas in Melbourne and it’s only gotten better and better! I'm keen to see what people in Adelaide think of the show.

What sorts of themes/topics are you covering in this show?
I talk heaps about family. I love people coming up to me after the show and talking to me about their family experiences and how they are similar to some of the stories from my show. Also, I talk about my thoughts on Australia Day and some ideas moving forward.

Why did you decide to incorporate those subjects into the material this year?
I reckon it’s cool to reflect on our past experiences and grow and change, but more importantly, have a laugh!

Dane Simpson plays Drama Llama at Rhino Room (Adelaide Fringe) 27 February-2 March.
