From Interactive Theatre International – who brought audiences 'Faulty Towers The Dining Experience' – comes 'Confetti & Chaos’.
The show, playing Melbourne International Comedy Festival, is a heartwarming and hilarious theatrical comedy experience – dinner and a show – starring a talented cast presenting something which is parts scripted and parts totally off the cuff.
'Confetti & Chaos' is a surprise party gone wrong. It may just be the worst wedding reception you've ever been to, with audiences becoming caught in the crossfire of the unfolding secrets, uninvited guests, and immersive hilarity of it all.
We chat to cast member (and Melbourne local!) Rebecca Fortuna, who takes on three roles in this chaotic ride of a show.
So many audiences would be familiar with ‘Faulty Towers The Dining Experience’ and now, from the folks responsible, there’s ‘Confetti & Chaos’. What do you love most about this show?
'Confetti & Chaos' is built on the same framework as 'Faulty Towers', being partly scripted, partly improvised and totally unhinged. However, it’s a totally new and original world and story, with lots of quirky characters and awkwardly delicious situations. But at the same time it’s so familiar because we all have ‘those’ family and friends that know how to make or break an event. Hopefully audiences will leave thinking, 'wow, they make my family look tame'.
Why should audiences come and be a part of it?
The show is about family. And a big reminder that you don’t get to choose them! Everyone has been to an awkward wedding or has been subjected to family drama at an event. Now you can come and enjoy the chaos with no consequences! This show is a lot of fun; you will laugh and gasp audibly; it’s full of heart and also wild times. And just when you think it can’t get any more chaotic, act two begins!
How did you come to be involved with the company – you’ve previously been part of ‘Faulty Towers’ as well, yes?
I joined the company in 2018 when I auditioned and was cast as Sybil in 'Faulty Towers'. The second round auditions were workshop style with the UK cast. To practise and be prepared I went shopping at Costco as Sybil with my partner. Needless to say, I landed the role and five years later my partner now knows when to respond accordingly with ‘yes dear’.
Why do you think this format of performance is so effective?
I have been performing interactive theatre for over a decade, it’s effective because people don’t want to just consume, they want to be immersed. When our audience walks in the room, they get to forget the outside world for two hours and they can be absorbed and get involved, if they choose. I love interacting with the audience, making someone feel seen and special for a moment, letting them shock me and playing with what they offer.

Tell us about your role in the show.
I actually play three roles in this show, which is part of the fun. . . And the chaos! Multiple costume and hair/wig changes, triple checking I am the right person at the right time. I play the bride, Stacey and the other two roles I like to leave as a surprise for the audience because honestly their reactions are too much fun and I’d hate to spoil it. I had an instant connection with Stacey because I was able to identify with her quickly and find our similarities. The overbearing family that are just way too close. . . Tick! The loving and more reserved partner who you had to ease into your chaotic family slowly, so they wouldn't get spooked and run a mile. . . Tick, tick!
What’s your favourite thing about playing this role?
I just got married in March 2023 and it made my wedding planning a breeze. I just kept thinking, well it can’t be as bad as Stacey and Will’s wedding and if it is then I will have some comedy gold to incorporate into MICF. Besides that, my favourite part is interacting with the audience in three very different and unique ways in multiple roles. Plus, witnessing collective laughter is so special and feeding off audience energy is electric. I also get to explore very different parts of me:
The simple, joyful go-getter, the strong independent woman, and the wild, sexually-charged party starter. Intrigued? Then come and meet them all!
What are you most looking forward to about playing Melbourne International Comedy Festival?
I love MICF so much. I have had the privilege of performing at it for years now. The city comes alive to the sound of laughter and I get to perform alongside a programme of epically talented and hilarious performers and comedians. Melbourne is my hometown so this year is extra special because all my family and friends will finally get to come and see the show!
