The year 2019 was a big one for comedian Blake Freeman, with sell-out seasons at comedy festivals and a quick trip to London's West End.

His brand of energetic and disarmingly-honest comedy makes the intensely personal relatable, and after a whirlwind few years building up his profile and just kicking goals, Blake is keen to fill us in on what's been going down lately.

Here, Blake answers some questions about his most recent material, and tells us how comedy came into his life.

What are you hoping to bring to audiences in 2020?
An update on everything that's been happening in my life in the last year. So getting into a relationship, travelling for the first time and trying to be smarter.

How did you make your start in the world of comedy?
I started comedy when a friend of mine wanted to try it and I decided I'd go and do it with him. It was awful, like we both bombed but I for some reason stuck with it!

And why do you think it's such a popular medium of entertainment?
I reckon stand-up is so popular because there's a super wide variety of people doing it and doing it really well, so there's so many different views and stories being told that people can connect with.

So 2019 was something of a breakthrough year for you. What's on your agenda for 2020?
For me, 2020 is the year I plan on trying more thing comedically. I’ve always only ever done stand-up and this year I want to branch out and try and do more things, whether that's writing a show, acting, podcasting, just trying more things.

You even travelled to London recently! What was that like for you?
London was awesome! I've not done much travelling before, so it was just cool to wander around a city like that by myself. I also experienced a culture shock for the first time when I realised in the UK they stand still on the right hand side of escalators.

Where is the next place outside of Australia you'd like to visit and why?
I would really love to go to the U.S. . . I've always wanted to go and I think doing comedy over there could be awesome!

What's the biggest misconception about comedians?
I don't know what the biggest misconception about comedians would be. I don’t really know what any of the conceptions are.
